Everest Base Camp Weather March, April, and May

March, April, and May fall during Nepal’s spring season, also known as the ‘dry season.’ This pre-monsoon time is widely considered the best time to travel to Nepal. At the same time, it is one of the busiest times to travel.

Trekking during spring in Nepal lets you view rhododendrons blooming everywhere, filling the mountain trails with different colors. Depending on which month you are planning to trek to the Everest Base Camp, you will have different things to expect including different ranges of temperatures, climatic conditions, and popularity.

Starting from March, the temperature slowly starts to increase and the forests slowly reach their peak with blooming flowers sometime during mid-April. The trails also slowly start to become crowded with trekkers from all around the world with the number peaking at some time during May.

Despite everything, the months of March, April, and May offer you the opportunity to embark on the Everest Base Camp trek or the Luxury Everest Trek in less dramatic climatic conditions of the Himalayas while enjoying the outstanding views of nature.

During this time of the year, you’ll have more variable weather with clear mornings and partly cloudy afternoons. Due to its geography and topography, the climate on and around Everest Base Camp varies widely.

Normally during these months, the climate around Everest Base Camp is fantastic with the clear blue sky. Of course, this is the one main reason why trekking routes such as Everest Base Camp Trek, Everest Base Camp Cho La Pass Trek, Gokyo Valley Trekking, and Everest Panorama Trekking are so popular in spring.

Generally, Everest Base Camp weather during March, April, and May is mild i.e., hot in the daytime and cool at night. The average temperature during these months is 17 °C during the daytime with a maximum temperature of 25 °C. But, during the night and at altitudes above 4000 meters, temperatures can get as low as -15 °C.

Everest Base Camp Weather in March

March marks the beginning of the spring season when the weather starts to warm up. Generally, all plants, animals, and birds come back to life by feeding and breeding in warming temperatures. During March, temperatures start to increase, but there is still a chance of cold in the high Himalayas and during the night.

Though March falls in the spring season which is peak trekking season, the trails aren't yet as crowded as they will be next month. This means you get both pros and cons of traveling during early springtime for the Everest Base Camp trek. Therefore, during March, the overall trekking experience will be awesome.

Temperature: Throughout March, daytime temperatures will generally reach highs of around 7 °C. At night, the average minimum temperatures drop down to around -12 °C.  You might feel warm during the day while ascending the mountain, but you’ll want to bring some extra layers for the chilly nights.

Wind: The average daily wind speed in March is around 15 km/h (roughly 9 mph).

Everest Base Camp Weather in April

April is another outstanding time to embark on the Everest Base Camp trek. It is considered the best month to trek during the spring season. During this month, the weather starts to become even warmer than in March and it is still in the dry season. The climate during this time is neither too cold nor too hot. It's a perfect scenario for mountain trekking in Nepal, particularly in the Everest (Khumbu) region though you may have to face colder nights in high-altitude places for a few days.

Trekking to Everest Base Camp in mid-spring is an outstanding opportunity to trek in the Himalayan landscape at its prime with colorful forests with flowers and greenery and outstanding views of mountains in the clear sky.

In Nepal, May is the end of the spring season, just before the monsoon arrives. In May, you can expect bright sunshine or warm sunny weather across most of Everest Base Camp. Everest summits occur during this month, so you know the weather must be ideal.

Temperatures are more bearable even in high-altitude places like the Everest Base Camp and in lower places, you can trek with just one layer of clothes on. Thus, you'll likely come across many fellow trekkers, climbers, and summiteers heading towards the various destinations in the Everest region including Mount Everest.

Temperature: Throughout May, daytime temperatures will generally reach highs of around 15 °C. At night the average temperatures drop down to around 0 °C.

Tips for trekking in March, April, and May

  • You are recommended to wear clothes in layers because the early spring may still be cold during the mornings, late afternoon, and at night.
  • Spring is the peak trekking season and the accommodations and other services need to be booked earlier.
  • If you want less crowded trekking, trek in the early days of spring, if you are ready to cope with the comparatively colder nights. Or, you can trek to alternative routes in the Everest region like Gokyo lakes or High Passes.
  • During spring, the views of mountains and surrounding landscapes are marvelous, you may want to capture these beautiful views with your cameras. So, don't forget to bring your cameras.
