Winter in Nepal stays for three months, December, January, and February. The month of December welcomes winter and ends in February. The precipitation is very low with less to no probability of rainfall but you may see snowfall in January. People have been trekking in Nepal throughout the year because everyone has a different range of temperature in which they feel comfortable or bearable. 

Many treks in the winter because of their choice and many do so because they only have free time in winter. Whatever may be the reason, the clear sky, amazing views of scenic villages and snow-peaked mountains will make you feel like winter is the best season. You just have to pack a few extra things to keep you warm when it gets cold.

Trekking in Nepal in December

Don’t worry if all the holiday you have is during December, trekking in Nepal during this month is completely doable and rewarding. In addition to clear views, you also get to witness several festivals like Christmas and New Year in cities like Kathmandu and Pokhara either during the starting of your trip or during the end. You have to be careful to choose the best time if you want to be more adventurous and trek in higher places.

In December early mornings and nights are cold, it is quite warm during the daytime. It starts to get colder and colder day by day. In lower regions, the average temperature is about 12°C while in higher regions it may get freezing cold. Early December is comparatively warmer before it starts to get really cold. You may start to see snowfall during Late December.

Unlike other months, there is no time you can choose when the temperature gets slightly warm, the whole month is cold and high altitude trekking shouldn’t be planned during January. But the mountains are covered in an extra layer of snow and the skies are very clear with no chances of rainfall. You can visit the best viewpoints during warm daytime and sleep cozily with extra sleeping bags you bring during the night.

January is the mid winter time and the coldest month in Nepal. It gets very cold in the high altitude places. At lower places, days are warm with colder nights. In the Himalayan region, temperatures can change dramatically during the day and night. It can get as cold as -6°C with an average temperature of about -2°C.

 

Trekking in Nepal in February

February is the last month of winter in Nepal. Days are still cold but it slowly starts to get warmer as the month goes by. The outstanding views of the snow-peaked mountains won’t be obstructed by dark clouds or rain. Even if February marks the end of winter, trekking at high altitudes like in high passes is yet not recommended.

During February the temperature slowly starts to increase with days getting warmer. There will be no rainfall or snowfall in February (at lower altitudes). Trekking in Late February is relatively easier than early because of the gradually increasing temperature. Though the temperature in Kathmandu and Pokhara gets more comfortable slowly, temperature above 4000 meters can still drop up to -5°C on cold days. 

 

Tips for trekking in Nepal in Winter

  • Make reasonable plans and trek and take advice from an expert
  • Dress in layers so that you can remove or add clothing as temperature increases or decreases
  • Stay hydrated even if you may not feel like drinking water. Drink hot water/tea which will keep you hydrated as well as warm.
  • Travel only with a guide to ensure your safety in a dramatic mountainous environment
  • Be sure to pack warm clothes and an extra sleeping bag designed for cold temperatures
  • Take proper trekking boots to avoid your feet getting into the snow.
  • Carry enough batteries and torchlights with you as it can get dark very soon in winter.

Though it is doable, high altitude trekking is not advised during winter in Nepal. Trekking in comfortable regions in lower altitude is perfectly fine and rewarding. These are the treks that we think are best to complete this winter.


3 Days Poon Hill Trek
