Getting There

The actual Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek officially starts from Nayapul. You’ll have to get to Nayapul by bus, no matter where you are.

Most start their journey from Pokhara. But if you are in any other city in Nepal, you can consult with Sublime Trails to arrange your transport.

A significant number of trekkers are also in Kathmandu, Nepal’s capital city when they think of doing the trek. If that’s you, you can have us arrange a plane or a bus ticket from Kathmandu to Pokhara.

Best Time and Weather for Poon Hill Trek

Spring is perfect for trekkers who like greenery and don’t mind a few drizzles sometimes. The temperature is 5°C min and reaches up to 30°C max. You get to see blooming rhododendron flowers of different colors. This time is fairly perfect for the Poon Hill trekking and offers a majestic clear view of the mountains.

Autumn is also one of the best seasons to complete any trek in Nepal including the Poon Hill trek. The temperature in this season ranges from 0°C minimum to 25°C maximum. This season gives the best experience with beautiful views of mountains and peaks. Trek can be easily made without any hassle and hesitations.

Meanwhile, summer coincides with monsoon meaning unexpected rainfall but, with preparation, you will be just fine. The temperature is 5°C min and reaches up to 30°C max. The best part is that you'll be able to trek in your shorts and T-shirt without carrying a heavy bag this season.

During winter, the days are cold and short but you won’t be going to higher elevations. You will get to catch some outstanding views, just pack an extra jacket and a sleeping bag. The temperature in this season ranges from -5°C minimum to 15°C maximum.

Permits Needed

You will need the ACAP permit and your TIMS card for Poon Hill Trek.

Annapurna Conservation Area: Poon Hill falls under the Annapurna region of Nepal. This is the reason that trekkers should take an ACAP before heading to the Annapurna conservation area. Annapurna Conservation Area permit costs Rs.3000 per person. This permit has no expiry date.

TIMS Trekkers Permit: TIMS Trek Permit costs you Rs. 2000 per person if you are an individual trekker. This permit is green in color. Whereas it costs Rs.1000 if you are going with an agency. This permit is blue in color.

Both of these permits are single-entry permits that are non-refundable and non-transferable.

Poon Hill Trek Difficulty

The Ghorepani Poon Hill trek is moderately difficult. It is best for beginners and families with kids. Meanwhile, trekkers looking for more challenges can merge this trek with the trek to Mardi Himal Base Camp.

The total distance covered is around 30-40 miles (50-65 kilometers), depending on the route chosen.  Look for 5 to 6 hours of trekking each day on fairly relaxed terrain. The highest altitude you will reach during this trek is 3210 meters in Poon Hill from where you will return.

Since you will not stay there, you will not be at any risk of altitude sickness. Some preparation before the trek can surely help.

Though some parts of the trek may be demanding, especially uphill climbs, and altitude can be a challenge, most people with adequate fitness and proper preparation should complete it without significant difficulties.

FAQs

  • Weather in Poon Hill is not as extreme and dramatic as it is in higher altitudes. It really depends upon what type of climate you are adapted to. Poon Hill is coldest in March and warmest in the month of May. During spring, the weather is lovely with mild temperatures and low precipitation and clear sky. Summer is warm - it can get up to  25 degrees Celsius. But, you have to be prepared for heavy rainfalls which slowly reduces during late summer in August. During autumn, the temperature will again be comfortable and precipitation is low. Weather in winter is perfect for some people and not for others. Temperatures can get around 0 degrees Celsius, but there will be no rain.

  • Poon Hill Trek is completed in just 3 days. On the first day, you will walk for 3 hours after getting to Nayapul. On the second day, you will walk for about 5 hours. Then, you will return the same route to reach Nayapul, and it will be easier because the trail will mostly be easy descent.

Very nice place and great views

This holiday I didn't want to go anywhere else but just stay at a nice hotel in Pokhara and relax with my husband. But, my husband is a restless guy, he wouldn't just end this trip without doing a trek. I found the best deal after contacting Ram. So we decided to go to Poon Hill, it wasn't our first time in Nepal or even to Poon Hill. But, it surprises you every time. It was our middle ground, I wanted a laid back holiday, he couldn't stay and relax at a place. So, in short, it was yet another fun time with Sublime Trails.

Views to make you really happy

I''m not a kind of person who can walk a lot. But, Im proud to say that I completed my 3 days Poonhill trek. It wasn't easy for someone like me, If someone takes an hour to walk a distance I will take 3 hours for me to walk the same. Our guide was absolutely humble, caring and encouraging so he took care of us. When we reached Poon Hill, I forgot everything for few minutes. It was just brilliant how beautiful the mountains looked from there.
